Frequently asked questions.

Design Approach and Values

  • We combine the precision of German design culture with the openness and creativity of our Australian background. Our focus is on clarity, care, and character. Creating spaces that are both practical and deeply personal.

  • We build with a “less but better” mindset: efficient use of materials, durable details, and energy-conscious design. Wherever possible, we use natural materials and work with local craftspeople. On a personal note, we have kids and fundamentally believe its important to build a better future for them.

  • Yes. We see architecture, interiors, and furniture as one connected whole. This allows us to create spaces that feel considered at every scale.

  • We work best with clients who value design, are open to collaboration, and want to create spaces that last and have meaning. We don’t build crap, and we don’t build for purely investment purposes. We build to create treasured spaces for people. Our projects succeed when there is trust and shared vision.

  • The Client’s Journey is a PDF that explains our process, engagement options, and design approach. You can download it directly from our website via the Starter Tools section.

Costs and Budgets

  • The cost of a custom home depends on size, complexity, and level of finish. In Hamburg, realistic budgets usually begin around €3,000 per square metre, while in Western Australia a realistic starting point for custom builds begin at AUD 3,500 per square metre. We always look at the whole project budget, not just construction, to give you a clear picture from the start.

  • A complete project budget covers more than just materials and labour. It should allow for design fees, approvals, permits, consultant costs, and a contingency for unexpected items. Factoring these in early avoids surprises and ensures the design matches what you can comfortably invest.

  • We offer three clear paths for engagement: fixed-fee concept design, stage-by-stage design services, and tailored packages for complex projects. This gives flexibility while ensuring costs are transparent from the beginning.

  • Yes. Our concept design packages are offered at a clear, fixed fee. They are designed to give you a professional, well-considered concept you can take forward. Either with us, directly to a builder, or to a draftsman with our support.

  • Simply enter your project budget, and the calculator will show a typical breakdown: construction, design, approvals, fees, and contingency. It is a quick way to set expectations and see how far your budget can go.

Regional and Sustainable Design

  • Yes. We work with clients throughout the South West, including Margaret River, Busselton, and the wider “down south” region. These areas have a unique character and lifestyle, and we design homes that respond to the coastal climate and natural setting.

  • The South West has a distinct culture, climate, and landscape. Designing here often means balancing relaxed coastal living with durable materials that suit the conditions. We draw on our knowledge of both local traditions and contemporary approaches to create homes that fit beautifully into the region. Also, Busselton faces both North and the Ocean, which i pretty unique in Western Australia.

  • For us, high end and sustainable go hand in hand. We use natural, durable materials, consider passive solar design, and integrate systems like rainwater harvesting and solar power. The aim is to create homes that feel luxurious, but also reduce impact and last for generations.

  • Yes. We regularly manage projects remotely, using digital tools and clear documentation to keep everything on track. Site visits can be arranged when needed, but we also collaborate with local builders and consultants to ensure the design is delivered to a high standard.

  • Absolutely. We value local knowledge and craftsmanship. For South West projects, we collaborate closely with local builders, trades, and suppliers. This ensures the design is practical, well-built, and rooted in the regional context.

Hamburg and International Work

  • Yes. We have worked with both startups and established companies in Hamburg to create office spaces that reflect identity, inspire teams, and support growth. Startups in particular benefit from environments that are flexible, practical, and memorable. Spaces that help attract talent and build culture.

  • A branded environment is a space that tells your story. From the reception desk to the meeting room, every detail can communicate the values of your company. We help businesses in Hamburg create inspiring workplaces that function well day to day and also strengthen their brand presence.

  • German architects are highly skilled and precise in their craft, and we respect that deeply. Where we differ is in focus: we bring an international perspective, a design-driven approach, and a client experience that is clear and approachable. We often collaborate with German colleagues to combine strengths — our design vision with their deep local knowledge of code, construction, and regulation.

  • Yes. Collaboration is a key part of our practice. For larger or complex projects, we partner with local German architects in joint ventures. This allows us to focus on design and concept, while they bring expertise in local codes, approvals, and construction standards. The result is stronger projects for our clients.

  • Absolutely, yes please! As an international practice, we understand the challenges expats face when starting projects in Germany. We provide a clear, English-speaking point of contact, and we bridge the gap by working alongside local German architects and consultants. This way, clients feel supported and confident from start to finish.

Engagement and Collaboration

  • A free consultation is an informal meeting, online or in person, to talk through your project. We discuss your ideas, answer questions, and outline the next steps. You can book one directly through our website Starter Tools page.

  • Yes. We often collaborate with builders and draftsmen. You can engage us for concept design, checking, or specific design stages, depending on what your project requires.

  • We build a tailored team for each project, coordinating with structural engineers, energy consultants, and contractors. Collaboration is open and transparent, ensuring everyone works toward the same outcome.

  • Yes. We work across Germany and Australia, as well as internationally. Remote collaboration is part of our practice, supported by clear communication and digital tools.

  • Yes. We regularly work with clients remotely. Meetings can be held online, drawings are shared digitally, and we provide clear documentation. Site visits can be arranged as needed, though travel costs may apply.

Process and Timeline

  • We structure every project around five stages: Discover, Design, Approvals, Document, and Deliver. This gives a clear framework that guides you from the first ideas through to the finished building.

  • A full process — from first meeting to completion — typically takes 12 to 24 months. This includes design, approvals, detailed documentation, and construction. Smaller projects or renovations can be shorter.

  • Most custom projects require some form of approval. We guide you through the process, prepare all necessary documentation, and coordinate with local authorities to keep things moving smoothly. Our designs are grounded in regulation and realistic outcomes, ensuring a strong chance of approval. While there are no guarantees, we’re experienced in balancing compliance with creativity — and know when it’s worth pushing the boundaries.

  • Yes. Many clients start with a concept design package. It allows you to explore ideas, test budgets, and see whether we are the right fit before committing to the full process.

  • Projects evolve. If your scope or budget changes, we adjust with you. We communicate clearly about the impact on design, approvals, and costs so you can make informed decisions.

Site Visits and Location

  • Whenever possible, yes. A site visit gives valuable context and helps us understand opportunities and constraints.

  • This depends on the project. Typically we visit at the start, at key milestones, and during construction. The frequency is agreed with the client at the beginning.

  • Travel and accommodation costs are charged in addition to design fees. These are discussed and agreed before any visits are arranged.

  • Yes. With good communication and local partners, projects can be managed with fewer site visits. We combine digital tools with selective in-person visits to balance cost and quality.

  • We rely on detailed drawings, clear documentation, and collaboration with trusted local professionals. Regular communication and digital reviews keep projects on track, even from a distance.
