The Flower Shop aka Joshua Brook (temporary) Homebase

After Tim and his Kubit mates were evicted from their dream office, he found himself office-less with 2 tonnes of wood and surplus furniture overtaking his garage. Just 500 meters from his home, the beloved flower shop “Floristik Hester” had closed their doors and were looking for a temporary tenant.

Despite the inbuilt concrete steps to display flowers, the 1.6meter clearance doorframe to the cellar (ouch) and a total square meterage of 15m2, it was a match made in heaven.

Project: Joshua Brook (temporary) office

Location: Hamburg, Germany

Architect + Builder: Tim Pardoe

Photography: Arne Schulz

The concept was to recycle as much leftover material from the Kubit office as possible, whilst still creating a memorable, if not experimental “Pop-up store” in one of Hamburg’s more elite shopping streets.

It was an interesting experiment in creating a Tiny Office, with a large street window, that was incredibly visible to passing foot traffic. Watching people go about their lives, meeting interesting neighbours and many many times explaining to disappointed visitors that their beloved Flower shop had indeed closed down, was a welcome distraction from work.

The total fit-out was completed in 5 days and cost under 500€. A beautiful old screw stool (covered in dirt and grime in the basement) was discovered discarded in the basement, which was cleaned, re-conditioned and used as in the display window.

The original Flower shop had a beautiful old sign that was too good to throw away.

After a few days of playing with ideas - inspiration struck. Cut the “U” to form a “J” :)

Whilst this office is not the permanent home for Joshua Brook, it was great while it lasted.
